Today I went to my cousin's "birthday" (which was really a disguise for his engagement party), the dress theme was 'Asian', as was the food. Oriental outfits being one of my favourite, I thought I'd have an absolute ball and dress in a kimono, but toned it down in the last minute, although I wish I hadn't. Everyone went all-out, and there were so many elaborate Asian outfits at the party! A full Korean costume (I had never seen one in real life, so beautiful!), full-length kimonos & obis, samurai outfits, vietnamese & chinese outfits, and as it turns out, I was the one underdressed for once! I had to point out the kimono sleeves on my top, and my geisha-ish shoes, when someone asked if I came dressed in an 80's theme instead of Asian...
Top: Saucy Lulu vintage muslin cloth, beaded & sequinned, kimono sleeves, and sash at the back
Pants: Akira Isogawa Tuck Waist Pants in Ink (love the pockets!)
Thought I'd share some pics of the Asian food with you all. My family gatherings always revolve around food, and we certainly know how to enjoy it...
Kuey (Malaysian dessert) in foreground & 'Turtle backs' (Chinese) in background
Yummy food pics! Sounds like a fab party!
ReplyDeleteAnd that kimono sleeve top looks divine on you!

ReplyDeleteGreat outfit, superb food!
ReplyDeleteFood looks delicious. Love your top.
ReplyDeleteoh god! the food looks delicious! And your Saucy Lulu blouse looks amazing on you, it drapes beautifully! I love the soft pallete of colors.
ReplyDeleteBefore I even read your post I knew you had the Asian thing going from your top. Modern version =) You look gorgeous! I can relate with the food in parties! We are like that too - my mom explained that it is rude and embarrassing not to have enough food served for guests and that it is always better to have extra than be short of it. Culture maybe? Anyway, verything looks yummy!
ReplyDeleteoh yummm!!!! to the food and to your stella wedges. and that always happens to me, i get cold feet at last minute of a costume party and end up in something underdressed and underwhelming while everyone else is all out and having a ball. *sigh* i still think you look lovely though.
ReplyDeleteand it is so true, asian parties are always revolving around food. That's why i am looking forward to my grandfather's 80th in July in Hong Kong, partially because i can't wait to shop my little heart out, but also because the food is going be so damn amazing. my mouth is watering thinking of it.
Oh and guess what? The acne store opened yesterday! i went and had a look and they cherry-picked all the great stuff that i love but have never been able to find online/in my size, so i'm very excited. There was even the acne top i was going to buy when i was in new york, then changed my mind, but now think i will buy hahahaha. :)

ReplyDeletexx-LJ from SOS!
WOW Most are Malaysian food, who and where did you have them? I love that idea of having mini size Nasi lemak, so cute....by the way, did i tell you i am from Malaysia...
ReplyDeleteI love your outfit today... heart!
i love love love the trousers and those flowy sleeves!! xx
ReplyDeleteThank you everyone for such lovely comments!
ReplyDeleteLittle Fish - yep, I remember you're from Malaysia, KL is it? My mom/grandparents/aunts/uncles are all originally from KL, hence the abundance of Malaysian food, they all left after 'May 13'...Weren't the mini size nasi lemak too cute? Mom had a hand in helping my aunt make that :)
chekka cuomova - I had to google the origin of satay, as I was sure it was Malaysian, didn't realise it originated in Indonesia! :)
H - Can't believe you haven't tried coconut rice! Although I must admit I hadn't either until I moved to Oz! I LOVE coconut rice, and have even (in my student days), ordered only that at dinners (with no accompanying dishes)...so delicious! Hope you get to try it soon ;)
Kato - Harro! Oh! You have a Korean costume! Would've loved to see you in it! ;) The Jiao Zi are amazing, my aunt even had a write up in 'The Advertiser', saying the were the best in Adelaide...but don't worry about missing Asian food, I'm envious of you eating all that fine French fare!
FTSOF - Grazi, you're back! I was so sad when I clicked on your 'Medium for Fashion' link and it said the blog was deleted *phew* glad to hear you're 'still here' :) Beijos!
hrose - I'm sure your grandpa's 80th will be amazing!!! And yay, for Acne! Hope you get that top, one more store for me to check out when I'm next in Sydney ;)
I didn't even realize the party was 'costume', I just thought Asian theme, so as long as it looked a bit Asian it would've done, had no idea people would be in full kimonos & stuff, I was only going to wear an Haori (shorter kimono), but make it 'modern'...definitely not wear it in the traditional sense (don't have a proper obi, etc.)
stefanie - thank you SO much for the award! Have replied on your blog ;)
:)
xx

HAPPY SUNNY & JOYFUL DAY TO YOU!!!
Quanta coisa deliciosa!!!
Gorgeous pics, as always. And I loved your kimono inspired top! I was blessed to wear two Asian costumes for my weddings-- one Korean (as I'm Korean-American) and the other a traditional Chinese wedding dress (my husband is Chinese-American). In addition to a western wedding dress. I love ethnic wedding dresses and am jealous of my friends who get to don the rich Asian Indian wedding saris. They are always literally dripping in jewels.
ReplyDeletegreat outfit! and that sushi!!! looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteAw, well, under-dressed or not, I think you look beautiful! Love your pants especially! And sounds like you had a good time at the party! :)

Your outfit looks amazing - but the food has distracted me... I have a MASSIVE craving for Yum Cha all of a sudden!
ReplyDeleteOMG I love this food, where can I find it in London???
ReplyDeleteWow all the satay, nasi lemak and kueh seri muka make me miss home!
ReplyDeleteOh I think satay originated in Indonesia, but it's abundant in Malaysia as well.
Hmm, I don't know whether the fruit in jelly is Malaysian, but we do have this brand 'Nata de Coco' - basically it's a tiny coconut cube cube enclosed inside some jelly.
Love them shoes!!!
